Gradtitude

While I was running yesturday, sore and still recovering from the St. George Marathon last weekend (blogpost on this to come), I was thinking about all of the amazing people in my life. I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the women (and men) in my life that have offerred so much help and support to me everyday of my life, and especially while I transition into a new practice location.

The best opportunities can't always be planned, and when the opportunity opened for me to become my own business owner, a solo practitioner with an emphasis in wellness medicine, had to go for it.

The gratitude I felt stirred so much emotion inside of me. I felt myself tearing up during my run. I feel so impressed right now to thank my amazing sisters for their talents and experience and wisdom. Although I am the "big" sister, I look up to my little sisters so much. They have helped me move into and transform a disorganized office space into an organized wellness center.

We still have a lot of work to do, but what a great start they have given me! I want to thank my amazing friends, my "wow girls" and my loyal patients for following me through this move. It has been inconvient and frustrating for some, but everything will be calm and timely and "normal" again in a few more weeks.

I know I can provide a better way for patients to get healthy, stay healthy, prevent and reverse disease processes and age well for a better quality of life. That's really the goal, isn't it?  To live a long, healthy, and quality life, optimizing every moment. Thanks so much to you all, this new practice is going to be an amazing adventure and I hope that you will continue to join me!! THANK YOU!!

Run like a girl retreat, Zermott, August 2011

The August 2011 "Run like a girl retreat" was amazing! Thank you so much for joining us at the Zermott resort in Midway, Utah, for this fun event. It was a great weekend full of inspiring speakers, education and exercise! I loved the yoga, zumba, running, and exceptional women that I had the honor of spending time with. I enjoyed a wonderful girls-only weekend with my mom and sisters, met amazing women, and made new friendships.

The road race was a lot of fun! It was so great to see Michelle Simonitis running again. She is an Olympic and world class athlete and life-long friend of mine who is returning to competition after an intense injury. She won the10k  race and set the course record! I finished 3rd overall and enjoyed the beautiful (and tough) that took us up, then down, Memorial Hill.

I met Sharon Starika, a truly remarkable woman with an amazing life story, including surviving a life-changing experience after being hit by a semi-truck while cycling and the multiple surgeries that followed. Sharon specializes in optimizing movement using the Feldenkrais Method. For more information about Sharon and for details about her upcoming events or classes go to her website at SharonStarika.com.

I also met Blonde Runner who, as it turns out, is an old running and teammate of mine from the University of Utah! Blonde Runner Lora Heyl Erickson is a coach, triathlete and mother of 4. She is amazing at what she does. Lora shared with us how she balances family with training and coaching. She inspired us all! You can learn more about Lora including the road races she sponsors and join her blonde runner team by visiting her website www.blonde runner.com.

I enjoyed giving a presentation on women's health, vitamin optimization and hormone balance. I love educating women about what they can do to optimize and improve their health and quality of life! Many of the women who attended also participated in the 10k & 5k races, so it was fun for me to teach fellow atheletes what they can do to improve their training, performance and recovery from a medical view point.

It was also a special weekend for me because I celebrated my 40th birthday at the retreat! I am enjoying getting older. As a medical provider, wife and mother of four, I practice what I preach, so I can tell you that hormone therapy, vitamin optimization, diet/nutrition, maintaining a healthy weight, sleep and exercise help with the aging process. I am running better at 40 than I have in more than 15 years, and I feel better at this age than I did when I was younger. 40 is great!

If you missed  August 2011 retreat, please join us February2012 in St. George, Utah, for a southern utah retreat. Simply go to http://www.runlikeagirlretreat.com/ and register online. The race distance increases to a half marathon for those you looking for a challenge, or a great race to supplement their wellness, health and training.

Thank you!
And as always, be healthy and be well.
Kristie

Spring Cleaning: Cleansing Programs for the Body

Join me at a seminar this Thursday (March 31, 2011) at the amazing ELEVATE Gym in Orem, Utah as I present different cleansing programs for the body. I am frequently asked questions about body detoxification ("detox"). The most frequently asked question is usually, "Is a detox really necessary?" My short answer is always, "YES!" This question is followed by, "Why is a body detox necessary, and do I need one?" I try to educate people about the importance of body cleanses but describing the world in which we live.  We live in a world full of toxins and pollutions. Our bodies consume toxins constantly and at an alarming rate. Sometimes we actively participate in that consumption through smoking, drinking alcohol, poor diet and poor nutrition. Sometimes the consumption is more passive like breathing polluted air. If you eat and breathe, you would benefit from a body detox!
Join me at this free seminar to learn more about what the different types of body detoxes and learn how you can cleanse you body from pollutants and toxins. This seminar will be FREE at my favorite Gym (ELEVATE) in Orem, Utah. The address is 147 W. 400 N. near SBR (Swim, Bike Run) just off state street. It will start at 7pm.

21 Day Detox and Educational Seminar--Smashing Success!!!

Cody and I loved presenting an introduction to RAW foods and nutritional detoxing to more than 25 men and women (experienced and inexperienced RAW-foodists alike). It was a fun, educational and entertaining experience at Kristie's house in Springville this morning!

Cody, an amazing personal trainer (Elevate Utah and Pro-Phit) and food expert, presented the concept of a 21 day body and nutrition detox to our audience while Leanna and I sliced, diced, blended and juiced the fantastic and healthy recipes Cody encouraged and outlined for the 21 day detox in a faux Blend-tec vs Vitamix competition --the verdict is still out on which one was the winner :)

Cody discussed the physical and mental benefits of a body detox from both her personal uses, and professional experiences with clients as a personal trainer. I presented the many medical benefits to healthy eating and RAW foods. I also discussed the importance of recognizing balanced-health in the body. When the body is out of balance, whether it is due to hormone deficiencies, nutritional deficiencies, stress, adrenal fatigue, exercise deficiency, poor sleep or emotional upset, the resulting imbalances and compensations that take place in our bodies cause disease, unhealthy and advanced aging.

Leanna talked about her own experience with adrenal fatigue, and how eating RAW foods, changing her eating habits, balancing her hormones, treating her vitamin deficiencies, and balancing her health have foundationally changed her life forever. She is even back on track with her ironman triathlon training! What a great testiment to healthy living and lifstyle change! To read more about Leanna's experiences with adrenal fatigue and health, visit her blog: www.home-madehealth.blogspot.com/

Cody and I encouraged our audience to remember that how much we eat, what we eat, how we prepare our food, and the nutritional content of our meals is something that offers us control over our health AND over disease processes. Essentially, this means we have the power to choose if our desire is to be healthy, or if our desire to develop the diseases most commonly associated with poor dietary choices and increased body weight, such as: adult onset diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, fatty liver disease, heart disease, and stroke.

After reversing her adult onset diabetes with healthy lifestyle changes, and discontinuing more than 5 chronic-disease medications, one of my favorite patients said to me just a few months ago: "eating healthy isn't always easy or convient, but neither was diabetes." Very well said!! When we decide to eat foods that are good for us, lose weight, exercise, and balance the health of the body, the result is an amazing improvement in our overall health and well-being.

I educated our audience on the important roles that the adrenal gland, hormones, vitamins, and stress play in our health. I also discussed the value of yeast cleanses (both probiotics and yeast enzymes) in improving our gastrointestinal health, energy, cognition, absorption of vitamins and maintaining a healthy body weight.

Our audience enjoyed several meal tasters that we prepared for them including: an energy smoothie with almond butter and cardamom; apple, ginger, lemon, and spinach juice; basic quinoa salad; and zucchini with basal soup. Sooooo good!!

For information on these recipes (plus more), or to read about our fun RAW food morning with a side of medical and health education,  check out Cody's blog:  http://www.freshairwanted.blogspot.com/.

Balanced and healthy living to you all,

Kristie
